The Armory Show Celebrates the 25th Anniversary in 2019

The Armory Show's 2019 edition will present 194 galleries from 33 countries, bringing together an unparalleled presentation of international galleries in central Manhattan. Staged at Piers 92 & 94, the upcoming fair will feature a diverse breadth of compelling artworks—from new discoveries to historical masterpieces. The Armory Show, supported by Lead Partner Athena Art Finance, will open to the public March 7–10, 2019 with the VIP Preview Day on Wednesday, March 6.

To mark the fair’s 25th Anniversary edition, The Armory Show unveiled a campaign of iconic images taken from the fair’s first editions at the Gramercy Park Hotel. Accompanying the campaign is an exciting three-part digital narrative that chronicles the fair’s early years at the Gramercy Hotel through its relocation to Manhattan’s Westside.

Now On View | British Painter Phoebe Dickinson Exhibition in London | November 14

British painter Phoebe Dickinson unveiled her new urban and pastoral works painted during her year of global travel. “Journey Through Landscape” is on view at Tessa Packard Showroom in Chelsea, London until December 14, 2018. This new body of work marks a shift in the artist’s oeuvre, as Dickinson is well known for her portraiture in the style of late 19th-century American masters, such as John Singer Sargent.

Now On View | Women.Now. at ACFNY | Until February 18

The Austrian Cultural Forum New York (ACFNY) is pleased to present Women.Now., a group exhibition showcasing contemporary female artists based in Austria and the United States, curated by Sabine Fellner. This transmedial show unites artists from different generations, commenting on women’s role in society and the arts.
 
The exhibition pays homage to two major anniversaries. 2018 marks the hundredth anniversary of women’s suffrage in Austria. This movement allowed women to formally participate in political practices. Second, it remembers 1968, a year in which social norms defined by patriarchal structures were put under radical scrutiny as the feminist avant-garde was formed. In Women.Now., curator Sabine Fellner sheds light on the legacies of these monumental time periods and how they impact current artistic discourse . The contemporary art scene is still struggles with gender disparities, whether that be in the art market, museums, or exhibition venues.

The Armory Show Announces 2019 Curatorial Board

The Armory Show announced today that Sally Tallant, Lauren Haynes, and Dan Byershave been selected to curate The Armory Show’s 2019 edition, marking the fair’s 25th Anniversary Year since its founding in 1994. The Armory Show will open with a VIP Preview Day on Wednesday, March 6; the fair will be open to the public March 7–10, 2019.
 
Led by Nicole Berry, Executive Director, The Armory Show’s 2019 edition will once again convene a selection of top international galleries in Midtown Manhattan, presenting artworks that range from historical masterpieces to the latest contemporary projects by established and emerging artists. This year’s international curatorial team reflects The Armory Show’s core identity as a place for presenting new artists and strong curatorial viewpoints.
 
“We are thrilled to be working with these internationally renowned curators on the occasion of our 25th Anniversary Year,” says Nicole Berry. “The gallerists who founded the fair had a strong and important vision to present new voices in the arts. Capturing the spirit of the fair’s early days, while also looking toward the future, we have selected three curators who will bring new energy and perspectives to the 2019 edition. The Focus Kazakhstan Berlin exhibition Bread and Roses examines the work of four generations of Kazakh woman artists created since 1945. The exhibition, and its related artist residency program, with nearly 30 artists offers a fresh perspective on both modern and contemporary Kazakh art and culture. It proposes a broader model for considering art made by women in other post-Soviet and post-colonial contexts. The history of the Soviet Kazakh SSR with the rapid development of the Republic of Kazakhstan since its foundation in 1991, have created a melting-pot of ideas and influences between east and west that are expressed dynamically in its contemporary art production.

CHART End of Fair Report 2018 Edition

Under the new  direction of Nanna Hjortenberg, the fair received positive response for quality presentations, the expanded design fair,  special installations and the extensive public programming. The 2018 edition closed with a significant increase in visitors and international presence.

CHART closed on Sunday, 2 September with outstanding art and design presentations, 28,523 number of visitors, including a robust turnout of local and international collectors. Exhibitors and participating artists noted important presence of collectors, journalists and curators, which led to significant sales and institutional acquisitions. This reflected on the increased number of collectors and institutions, not only from the Nordic region, but also from other territories including Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, The Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and The United States.

Now in its sixth edition, 44 exhibiting galleries from the Nordic countries were invited to participate in the 2018 edition. The art fair section of CHART, featured outstanding 20th- and 21st-century artworks in a range of media presented by 32 leading Nordic galleries. The 2018 edition launched special presentations produced for the 2018 edition of the fair, and has an increased focus on solo and dual presentations. Notable presentations included: Galleria Heino, a new exhibitor, showed new works by Finland´s acclaimed photographer and video artist, Elina Brotherus; Galleri Magnus Karlsson presented new works on paper by Peter Köhler, made specifically for this year's edition; and Andersson/Sandström exhibiting large-scale works by Turner Prize-winning British sculptor, Tony Cragg.

"The visitor numbers for CHART has been rising year on year, but this is the first time we experience such an explosive increase in the number of guests. We have had guests from 22 different countries, visitors from 97 national and international cultural institutions and we see a very wide age range among our guests. Emerging Kazakh women artists are prefaced in the show by a group of eminent forerunners who have remained more or less invisible within the history of Soviet, Kazakh and world art. Against the tumult of Stalinist repression and its aftermath, the work of these women has forged a bridge between traditional Kazakh arts, crafts and ways of living, the Soviet avant-garde of the 1920s and 30s, socialist realism and a completely new approach to art making that emerged from the beginning of the 1980s. The works that these ‘great grandmothers,’ ‘grandmothers,’ ‘mothers,’ and daughters of contemporary Kazakh art have produced reflect disparate backgrounds, struggles and life experiences.

British Painter Phoebe Dickinson Unveils New Landscape Paintings | London Fall 2018

The upcoming exhibition will feature landscape works painted during her global exploration of rural and urban scenery.

British painter Phoebe Dickinson will unveil her new urban and pastoral works painted during her year of global travel. “Journey Through Landscape” will be on view at Tessa Packard Showroom in Chelsea, London from November 12 – December 14, 2018. This new body of work marks a shift in the artist’s oeuvre, as Dickinson is well known for her portraiture in the style of late 19th-century American masters, such as John Singer Sargent.
 
The show will present over 100 figurative plein air paintings ranging from earthly paradises to pastoral atmospheres.  The artist began painting in plein air as a means of escaping the four walls of her studio, painting in a range of sizes and capturing the vibrant glow of her many surroundings. The show is presented in a salon style hang, beyond the archetypal white cube that has become so principal in the contemporary scene.
 
The paintings depict cold Icelandic winter sceneries with a vantage point at the northern lights, the peaceful almost dreamy atmospheres in Malibu, California, to impressive medieval Florence. Although her paintings are classically informed, the oil paint and brief strokes give her paintings a nearly abstract impression. 
 
Throughout her artistic career, Dickinson has painted nudes, landscapes, and still-life’s, however, she is specifically captivated by portraiture, working in the tradition of William Nicholson. In 2018, Dickinson was accepted into the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery with her painting of the Cholmondeley children at Houghton Hall. The BP Portrait Award is one of the most prestigious portrait painting competitions in the world and represents the best in contemporary portrait painting. The Cholmondeley family has also commissioned the artist to paint the mother, Rose Cholmondeley, formerly Rose Hanbury. The portrait will be completed in September 2018.

The 2018 program includes CHART Emerging, a group exhibition with the new generation of artists in the Nordic region curated by Helga Christoffersen, Associate Curator at the New Museum, New York;  CHART Architecture intended to promote young, Nordic architects; CHART Curio, a thematic exhibition under the title ‘Trans Act!’, aiming to unravel complex structures in the field of design;  Alice Anderson exhibiting for the first time in the Nordic region; CHART x Designmuseum Denmark, exhibiting the work ‘Sinus’ where textiles are turned into an interactive instrument by artist Pearla Pigao, CHART X KØS, an audio walk that takes you through various transitory sites in Copenhagen by Rimini Protokoll, performances, concerts and talks ; CHART X THE ROYAL DANISH THEATRE / CORPUS a performative dance piece exploring the crossfield between art and performance.

44 exhibiting galleries from the Nordic countries have been invited to participate in the sixth edition of CHART. CHART ART FAIR, the core section of CHART, features outstanding 20th- and 21st-century artworks in a range of media presented by 32 leading Nordic galleries. CHART welcomes three new participants, Cecilia Hillström (Sweden), Galleria Heino (Finland), and Galerie Nordenhake (Sweden/Germany), and 29 returning galleries.

In conjunction with the art fair, CHART DESIGN FAIR invites the leading design galleries in the Nordic region to exhibit in the historic rooms of Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art. 12 exhibiting galleries will celebrate the Scandinavian tradition of arts and crafts, ‘Skønvirke,’ which inspired the founders of Den Frie, the first artists' association established in Denmark.

CHART Art Fair Announces Five Finalists for 2018 Architecture Competition

Five finalists were selected by this years panel of renowned judges. The finalists of the competition will design pavilions to be presented during the 2018 edition of CHART ART FAIR.

Finalists include: Cloud 9.0 (Sean Lyon); FRAME (Malte Harrif, Vitus Karsten Bjerre and Katrine Hoff); OPEN RESOURCE (Dennis Andersson, Mikkel Møller Roesdahl and Xan Browne); The Many Chairs Pavilion (Sofia Luna Steenholdt, Joachim Makholm Michelsen, Emil Bruun Meyer and Casper Phillip Ebbesen); Tight Knit (Jan Sienkiewicz and Uta Sienkiewicz)

The CHART Architecture competition, a key element of CHART SOCIAL, was launched in 2014 with the intention of promoting young Nordic architects and exploring the crossover between art, design and architecture. In 2018, CHART extended the call for applications to young and newly established architectural professionals, as well as students and recent graduates from the Nordic architecture schools. Five finalists were selected by this years judges and were chosen to design pavilions to house gastronomy partners and SPACE10 during CHART ART FAIR. The winner will be announced on September 1, 2018.

The 2018 concept is OPEN-SOURCE and challenges participants to unfold the potential of open-source content through modular design and cross collaborations, creating a platform for aesthetic experimentation and reusable design. In this collaboration CHART wants to underline the significant relationship existing between art and architecture, suggesting participants to design pavilions closely with artists as an integrated part of their team. Collaborations can be presented as initial ideas and then integrated in the further development of the pavilion.

This year the CHART Architecture competition is judged by Bjarke Ingels, architect and founder of BIG Bjarke Ingels Group; Beatrice Galilee, Curator of Architecture and Design at The Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art; Ben Clement and Sebastian De La Cour (benandsebastian), Artist-duo; Simon Frommenwiler, architect and co-founder of HHF Architects; Susanne Ottesen, Owner of Galleri Susanne Ottesen and Co-Founder of CHART; Thomas Lommeé, Founder and Partner of OpenStructure and Infrastructure.

The winners of this year’s competition will be offered a mentorship program with the aim to stimulate and support young architects’ careers. This competition will promote networking as well as promoting cross-sector collaboration amongst professionals.

At Frieze New York, Paul Kasmin Gallery presents a spotlight selection of works by Tina Barney alongside a curated group exhibition including work by Theodora Allen, Judith Bernstein, Saint Clair Cemin, Max Ernst, Barry Flanagan, Walton Ford, Alex Katz, James Nares, Roxy Paine, Elliott Puckette, Mark Ryden and Bosco Sodi.
 
Tina Barney’s spotlight brings together a selection of the artist’s large-scale photographic portraits of esteemed figures from the arts, most of which have never been exhibited. The works, taken between 1998 and 2011, include commissioned portraits for publications such as The New Yorker, Vogue and W Magazine featuring Carl Andre, George Condo, Joan Didion, Françoise Gilot and Ellsworth Kelly. This is Paul Kasmin Gallery’s 7th participation in Frieze New York, having presented annually since the fair’s inaugural edition in 2012.
